Historic Los Angeles Cemetery

Construction of the Los Angeles Metro Eastside Gold Line revealed unanticipated human remains that were ultimately determined to be burial grounds associated with a historic period cemetery formerly located within the project area. Constrained by no feasible construction alternatives to permit redesign of the proposed work, and construction contracts containing significant penalties for delays in the construction schedule, Cogstone developed a Treatment Plan that would not negatively impact scheduled construction. With the use of ground penetrating radar and high-frequency magnetic detection among other innovative excavation methods, the data recovery ensued and no construction-related penalties were incurred due to this very significant discovery. Ultimately, the excavations discovered a composite burial site including medical waste of amputated limbs, and the site of an indigent and Chinese cemetery.
